How telemedicine works
Telemedicine lets your healthcare provider care for you without an in-person office visit. It is done primarily online with internet access on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Telehealth is a critical infrastructure to efficiently implement the medical home model of care and provide high-value, coordinated, and unfragmented health care, and this service includes a continuum of remote and in-person care options, such as audiovisual, audio-only (telephone), portal interactions and remote patient monitoring.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the types of consultations allowed are for cold symptoms, prescription medication refills, skin rashes and/or skin problems, conjunctivitis, and mental and/or emotional health problems. Telehealth also has the convenience of avoiding traveling, saving costs in transportation, and reducing time in waiting rooms.
